From the newSLATE home screen, select [work on files].  Then:

    • To create new materials
      1. Click on [make a new file].
      2. Enter a name for your file (Latin characters only)
      3. Click on a folder name in the list of files and folders to select the folder in which your file will be created.
      4. Use the mouse to select the file type.

The file types currently available are:
word list -- a simple list of words or phrases
word definition list -- a list of words and their definitions (or translations), or any other type of related items (e.g. countries and capital cities)
topical notes -- an information hierarchy, like a simple outline

        Click [ok].
      5. Wait for the edit screen to load.
Click on the [?] for full insructions on how to format the file type you selected.
      6. Set your keyboard mapping (if desired).
From the "Virtual keyboard" drop-down menu, select the keyboard (if any) you wish to use.  If you wish to use a keyboard mapping, use the "My keyboard" drop-down menu to select the keyboard which matches (see here) your physical keyboard.  If no keyboard matches yours, select "<unspecified>" (see this). To activate the keyboard mapping, click to place a check mark in the checkbox for "Map my keyboard," or press the F2 function key.  To switch back to your own keyboard, that is, to turn off keyboard mapping, click to remove the check mark in the checkbox for "Map my keyboard," or press the F2 function key.  The keyboard shortcut F2 lets you quickly switch between your own keyboard and the virtual keyboard.
      7. Type in your material in the format for the file type you selected.

      8. Click [ok] to save your work.

    • To modify existing materials
      1. Select a file in the my files folder.
      2. Click [edit file] in the function list on the left.
      3. Edit your material in the format for the file type you selected.
      4. Click [ok] to save your work.
