    Java Requirements:

Mac OS X -- Mac OS X comes with Java pre-installed.  You may use any recent version of your browser to run newSLATE.  Either click on the "click to enter" slate graphic at the top left of any newSLATE web page, or click on the words "Java Web Start" in the links column on the left side of the any newSLATE web page.  On older OS X machines or if you prefer to run in "Classic Mode", you may use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.1 to run newSLATE, or you may follow the instructions below for running newSLATE with Apple Applet Runner.

Mac OS 8.6 to 9 -- To use newSLATE on a Mac running OS 8.6 or OS 9, you will need, as a minimum, a 300Mhz processor with 64MB RAM, with Virtual Memory on and set to at least 96 MB.  You will also need Macintosh Runtime for Java (MRJ) 2.2.5.  Download and install MRJ 2.2.5 from http://developer.apple.com/java/download.html. This download may take up to 30 minutes with a dial-up connection using a 28.8 K modem.
To find out if you need to upgrade your MRJ, click on the newSLATE logo at the top left of any of the regular newSLATE web pages.  (Click where it says "click to enter.")  If your system needs an MRJ upgrade, you will see a notice.
Once you have MRJ 2.2.5, you may run newSLATE with Microsoft Internet Explorer, or you may use Apple Applet Runner.

Running newSLATE on Mac OS 8.6 or 9 with Apple Applet Runner:

Apple Applet Runner is a tool which comes with the MRJ download. Once you have MRJ 2.2.5, you will find Apple Applet Runner on your system in:

      Macintosh HD |
           Apple Extras |
Mac OS Runtime For Java |
                     Apple Applet Runner(folder)  |
                          Apple Applet Runner(program)

(The program icon is a coffee cup.)  Start Apple Applet Runner and then go to "Open Location" on the File menu.  Enter the URL /ns.htm and click "Open."  WAIT for the system to initialize (it will look like nothing is happening -- be patient); newSLATE will then begin loading in a separate window.

Time Saver: Put a newSLATE shortcut on your desktop.  After newSLATE loads in Apple Applet Runner, use the Apple Applet Runner menu bar to select

      File | Save As...

In the pop-up dialog box, choose "Desktop" as the location and type in "newSLATE" as the name.  Click "Save" to put the Apple Applet Runner icon (coffee cup) on your desktop as a double-clickable shortcut to newSLATE.
