    To use newSLATE on a PC running
       Windows 9x/ME/NT/2K/XP/Vista, or
       Red Hat Linux 7.2
    or later, you will need, as a minimum, a 200 Mhz processor with 64MB RAM, and a web browser that fully supports Java 1.1 or later.

      For Windows, this includes:

    • MSIE 5 or later
      (MSIE 4 may cause problems)
      Download and install the latest version of MSIE at http://www.microsoft.com/ie/. Once the new version of MSIE is installed, restart your machine.  Then use the new MSIE to return to the newSLATE web site, and click on the "click to enter" slate graphic at the top left of any newSLATE web page, or click on the words "Java Web Start" in the links column on the left side of the any newSLATE web page.

       
    • Opera with Java
      Download and install the latest version of Opera at http://www.opera.com/.  Follow the installation instructions.  Then use the new Opera to return to the newSLATE web site, and click on the "click to enter" slate graphic at the top left of any newSLATE web page, or click on the words "Java Web Start" in the links column on the left side of the any newSLATE web page.

       
    • Netscape 6.2 or later with a full installation 
      (Netscape 4.X's Java is not complete and will not work)
      Download and install the latest version of Netscape at http://home.netscape.com/download/. Initially, a small setup program will load.  When you run the setup program, be sure to select a full installation to get the latest Java.  The main Netscape download will now begin.  Once the new version of Netscape is installed, restart your machine.  Then use the new Netscape to return to the newSLATE web site, and click on the "click to enter" slate graphic at the top left of any newSLATE web page, or click on the words "Java Web Start" in the links column on the left side of the any newSLATE web page.

      For Red Hat Linux, this includes:

      Netscape 6.2 or later with a full installation 
      (Netscape 4.X's Java is not complete and will not work)
      Download and install the latest version of Netscape at http://home.netscape.com/download/.     • Opera with Java
      Download and install the latest version of Opera at http://www.opera.com/.  Follow the installation instructions.  Then use the new Opera to return to the newSLATE web site, and click on the "click to enter" slate graphic at the top left of any newSLATE web page, or click on the words "Java Web Start" in the links column on the left side of the any newSLATE web page.

       
    • Mozilla 0.9.2 or later, with Java 1.3 or later installed

      Install Mozilla from the Red Hat Linux CD, or download it from http://www.mozilla.org.  Then, visit a web page which requires Java (such as ); if Java is not already installed, you will be prompted to download and install it.

      Note: We have not tested newSLATE on other versions of Linux.  If you are using another version, we would like to hear from you.  Write to .
