newSLATE access areas are a convenient way of making newSLATE files available to many newSLATE users at once. Any newSLATE user may have an access area for their newSLATE account by purchasing an Access subscription for a low yearly fee. Any newSLATE account holder, regardless of subscription level, can make use of the materials in an access area.
For example, teachers may have access areas for making materials available to their students. A teacher creates newSLATE materials and copies them to his/her access area. Students then log into newSLATE, and select either [work on files] or [take a quiz]. The students type in their teacher's newSLATE username as a new shortcut, and are immediately able to use the materials from the teacher.
You will also find a collection of publicly available materials in special access areas sponsored by newSLATE. You can take quizzes on the materials in any of these special access areas by using the shortcuts folder to select the access area with the materials of interest to you.
